The Early Warning Network Description

The Early Warning Network (EWN) provides emergency alerts for severe thunderstorms, hail, bushfires, tropical cyclones, tsunami, heavy rainfall, damaging winds and other threats. EWN monitors and tracks potentially dangerous weather systems and uses the network to alert people directly in the path of an event.

Weather Situation: West to northwesterly winds are expected to increase ahead of a cold front which will cross the state between Thursday and Friday.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 125 km/h are possible for elevated areas above 1900 metres from early Thursday morning.
Winds are expected to ease with the passage of the front early on Friday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass and Thredbo.

Weather Situation: A strong northwesterly airstream develops across Tasmania today as a vigorous cold front crosses the state this evening and early Thursday..
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h, are possible across the west of Tasmania this afternoon, extending to the remainder of the state this evening. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible at exposed costal locations and elevated terrain.
Winds in the west and south (including Hobart) ease below the 'damaging' threshold early Thursday morning, then clear the remainder of the state by late Thursday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.

Significant Weather Threat Map Wednesday, 18 July 2018
TAS: A SEVERE weather warning remains in effect for parts of TAS today as strong north-westerly winds strengthen ahead of an approaching cold front. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 2:45 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Bannockburn, Daylesford and Meredith. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast. They are forecast to affect Geelong City, Queenscliff and Torquay by 3:15 pm and Melton, Rosebud, St Albans, Sunbury and Werribee by 3:45 pm. Damaging winds are likely.

Multiple cold fronts will cross Tasmania over the coming three days bringing high rainfall totals. Widespread minor flooding is possible.
A series of vigorous cold fronts will cross the State this week. Highest rainfall totals are expected during Tuesday evening, and from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday.
Most catchments are wet from recent rainfall.
Three-day rainfall totals are expected to exceed 100 mm in the west, north west, parts of the central plateau, and along the Western Tiers. Widespread 30-80 mm totals are forecast for the north and north east catchments, and Huon catchment. Snow is likely at higher elevations.
A Minor Flood Warning is current for the Meander River. Widespread river rises are expected as a result of the forecast rainfall. Minor flooding is likely to develop at a number of locations.
Localised flooding is possible in small creeks and low-lying areas that receive heavy rainfall.
Further catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required.

Winds ease a little and shift westerly by early this evening, however another strong northwesterly airstream develops again on Wednesday afternoon.
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h, are possible across parts of the east, the west, and the north coast of Tasmania during Wednesday afternoon and evening. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible at exposed costal locations and elevated terrain.

An approaching cold front will generate vigorous west to northwesterly winds today. The front is expected to cross the southeast of NSW later in the evening, or early Wednesday, with winds behind the front shifting west to southwesterly and moderating.
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 90 km/h, with gusts in excess of 120 km/h, are likely today for alpine areas above 1900 metres.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS in excess of 90 km/h are possible in areas below 1900 metres this afternoon and evening. BLIZZARDS are possibe for apline areas above 1400 metres.
The National Parks Service of NSW recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve. Conditions are expected to gradually ease later tonight.
Locations which may be affected include Braidwood, Goulburn, Mount Ginini, and Thredbo. Thredbo AWS has recorded an average wind speed of 92km/h this morning.

Weather Situation: Strong to gale force northwesterly winds are occurring ahead of a cold front over Yorke Peninsula at 8 am and moving rapidly east. The front is expected to affect the Adelaide area from about 8:30 am, with the main front expected in Adelaide between 9 and 10 am, bringing squally winds and showers.
Ahead of the front, damaging northwesterly winds, averaging 50 to 70 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, are likely, mostly about elevated parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges, Mid North, southern Flinders Ranges and adjacent eastern slopes.
Damaging winds, averaging 50 to 70 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h are also expected across the warning area with the passage of the cold front, and for a period following the front.
Locations which may be affected include the Adelaide, Victor Harbor, Port Lincoln, Kingscote, Maitland, Clare, Murray Bridge, Keith and Mount Gambier. Winds are expected to ease over Eyre Peninsula around midday Tuesday, and in most other areas during the afternoon.
There have been multiple reports of trees down about the Mount Lofty Ranges overnight. Gusts of 90 to 95 km/h have been recorded at Hindmarsh Island, Point Avoid, Cape Borda and Stenhouse Bay this morning.

DAMAGING NORTHERLY WINDS averaging 50 to 60km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are forecast to develop over the warning area Tuesday morning and early afternoon.
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 120km/h are likely over Alpine areas (above 1000 metres elevation).
DAMAGING WINDS are expected to ease over western parts of the warning area during Tuesday afternoon and evening, however will remain possible over the southwest coast as a result of continuing showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Southern Australia braces for a series of strong cold fronts 16th July 2018 A series of cold fonts are expected to move across parts of South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania over the next several days.
During Tuesday, the first substantial front is likely to sweep across southern Australia with damaging north-westerly winds. Gusts of up to and exceeding 100km/h are possible, particularly across exposed coastal location and elevated terrain.
... Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected during Tuesday, with small hail being likely.
Behind this initial front, a burst of westerly winds is expected, before shifting back to the north-west ahead of a secondary front during Wednesday. This is likely to re-enforce strong to potentially damaging wind gusts to parts of eastern VIC, southern NSW and TAS late Wednesday and into Thursday. Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely, along with the potential for small hail.
Western parts of Tasmania are likely to see widespread falls of 20-60mm over the next 5 days with isolated heavy falls of up to and exceeding 100mm possible, which may lead to localised flash flooding, creek and river rises. Very cold temperatures are expected, particularly later into the week, has prompted numerous sheep grazier warnings for SA, TAS and VIC with the loss of livestock possible.
Snow is possible to elevations above 700m in western Tasmania over the next few days, while further snow falls of up to 30cm will be possible across the Alpine resorts in Victoria and southern NSW through to the end of the week.

Damaging northwesterly winds, averaging 50 to 70 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h, are forecast to develop about the Mount Lofty Ranges and adjacent eastern slopes, and near western and southern coasts, after midnight tonight. These damaging winds are expected to extend north to the Flinders Ranges on Tuesday morning.
Localised damaging winds, averaging 50 to 65 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are also forecast across the whole warning area for a period near and following the passge of the front on Tuesday.
Locations which may be affected include the Adelaide Hills, Strathalbyn, Victor Harbor and Robe overnight, extending to Port Lincoln, Kingscote, Maitland, Adelaide, Clare, Murray Bridge, Keith and Mount Gambier Tuesday morning. Issued at 10:59 am Monday, 16 July 2018. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS ACROSS TASMANIA DURING TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Weather Situation: A very strong northwesterly airstream develops across Tasmania during Tuesday as a cold front crosses in the afternoon. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h, are possible across all of Tasmania from around midday on Tuesday till early Tuesday evening.
Winds then ease a little and shift westerly by early Tuesday evening, however another strong northwesterly airstream develops again on Wednesday afternoon. Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Supervise children closely. * Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings. * Manage pets and livestock. * Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment. * Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004. * Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. * Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

An approaching cold front will generate vigorous west to northwesterly winds about the southeast on Tuesday. This front is expected to cross the south of the state during Tuesday and early Wednesday.
DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h are likely for alpine areas above 1900 metres from Tuesday morning.
DAMAGING WEST TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon. Winds are expected to ease later on Tuesday night, or in the early hours of Wednesday. Locations which may be affected include Braidwood, Goulburn, Mount Ginini, and Thredbo.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

WA Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds
... For people in South Coastal and parts of South West districts.
Issued at 8:40 am Monday, 16 July 2018. Damaging winds are expected near the south coast today with the passage of a strong cold front.
Weather Situation: A strong cold front will move through southern parts of the State during Monday. Showers associated with the front may produce DAMAGING WINDS to 100 kilometres per hour and could cause DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. DAMAGING WINDS are likely to develop over coastal areas to the west of Albany by 11am Monday, before extending through the remainder of the warning area by 3pm Monday. Conditions should then start to ease from the west during Monday evening.
Tides between Augusta and Bremer Bay are likely to rise ABOVE THE NORMAL HIGH TIDE MARK with VERY ROUGH SEAS and POTENTIAL FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS. DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS are likely which could cause beach erosion.
Locations which may be affected include Albany, Mount Barker, Augusta, Bremer Bay, Walpole and Windy Harbour. People in the south of WA experience a front as windy as this about 5 times per year.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: * If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. * Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. * Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. * If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. * Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. * Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways. * Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris. * Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live. * Assess your home, car and property for damage. * If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs. * If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
