"It just felt awesome," says Darcy.
If you want to make a young person feel that great, and if they're a Year 6 student showing #compassion, integrity and #kindness in their everyday lives, nominate them now for the 2018 Fred Hollows Humanity Award at: http://bit.ly/HollowsHumanityAward

Did you know Australia is the only developed country to have trachoma as an eye #health challenge?
We're working to #endtrachoma here, with partners like HSBC.

Can you imagine going from almost completely #blind to topping your class and doing vocational #training?
That's what's happened to young Hao from Lao PDR who we met four years ago – sight-saving surgery has seen the 13-year-old become a full-time 4th-grader at the local public school and a young monk serving his village.
Without support from people like you, our A+ monk wouldn't be where he is right now.

"When you walk into a ward where people have had good eye surgery... your smiles are returned.
"That's pretty exciting stuff," Fred told the ABC's Caroline Jones in 1990.
It still makes us excited, every time.

FACT: the most effective way of supporting a charity is to provide a regular donation every month.
Why?
Because a steady income allows us to plan ahead and create effective, long-term solutions for training needs, surgery demands, and equipment requirements.

40 years ago this month, Fred and Gabi were taking part in the work that would lay the groundwork for what is now The Fred Hollows Foundation.
Here’s (from left to right) Fred, 'Michael' Mace, Jilpia Nappaljari Jones, Gabi and Hugh Taylor in remote Australia in July 1978.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of friends gathered at Fred and Gabi's house and began what would become The Fred Hollows Foundation.
One of the first people they were determined to help was Dr Sanduk Ruit, Fred’s great mate who he worked so closely with in #Nepal.
This week, Dr Ruit was back at Gabi’s house to launch his #biography The Barefoot Surgeon with some of the friends and supporters who have been there for all those years, including Ray Martin (at left).... Photo by Michael Amendolia who was there 25 years ago and again this week

THIS is the face of change.
Eighty-year-old Kemeru Abdela is the 100,000th person in Ethiopia we've helped get surgery for the eye disease trachoma.
She had the operation last week in Ethiopia's Oromia region, a place where some 27 million people are at risk of developing the disease and 150,000 are in danger of losing their sight without surgery.
... "By working together, we can eliminate this ancient disease," our #Ethiopia Acting Country Director Dr Zelalem Habtamu said.

Did you know 37% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults have #diabetes, and a third of those have the eye condition diabetic retinopathy.
But 98% of blindness from diabetes is preventable and, in National Diabetes Week we reaffirm our commitment to making sure people like ranger and renowned artist Yanjami get the help they need for their diabetic eye disease.
With our help, he made the nearly two-day journey from Parnngurr to Port Hedland to get laser treatment.

What makes a Champion of Change?
How about leading a campaign to stop maternity leave being a punishable offence for female eye health professionals?
That's what The Foundation's Dr Ciku Mathenge (at left) did at Nairobi University. That fabulous effort as well as decades of work making sure #women get equal access to eye #health lead to her recognition as a 2018 Champion of Change at the recent World Ophthalmology Congress.
... Congratulations Dr Mathenge!

15 years ago this month, floods devastated Zehni's village in Pakistan. Worse for the 45-year-old, she was also blinded by cataract.
In 2007, we helped her get surgery for both eyes, and that meant her daughter Hassina no longer had to care for her and she could return to farm work and caring for the grandkids. For a family earning less than A$1.50 a day, that has a huge impact.
This is the change your support helps to make happen. #Thankyou
