About The Hills Grammar School

The Hills Grammar School provides a safe and supportive learning community for students Pre-K to Year 12

The Hills Grammar School Description

The Hills Grammar School is A Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 Independent, Non-Denominational, Co-Educational School serving the Northern suburbs and Hills District of Sydney since 1982.

Set in 18ha of magnificent bushland and landscaped gardens, it features exceptional facilities designed to foster learning and a collegial atmosphere.

The School was conceived as a co-educational and non denominational K-12 School with a major emphasis in the development of excellence in scholarship, citizenship and personal development. Its ethos was underpinned by a strong commitment to humanitarian values based on personal integrity and social responsibility. The founder, Mr Ross Booth, worked tirelessly to enlist support for the establishment of the School and in 1982 the Founding Council was formed.

Today 'Hills' is a vibrant K - 12 learning community which is made up of approximately 1100 students, 170 staff and over 700 families. In 2010 the Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC) opened its doors to the youngest and newest members of the Hills family.

How time flies! We celebrated 100 Days of Kindergarten on Friday. Kindy and their Year 6 buddies worked together on their 100 Days hats and everyone enjoyed the 100 Cupcakes gathering with parents in the afternoon.

On Wednesday we welcomed two students from our Japanese sister school, Takeda High. Sakura Watanabe and Kana Kodama flew from Hiroshima to Sydney eager to spend three weeks at Hills Grammar. This is their second visit after coming on their annual school trip in 2016. The girls met up with old friends, Sarah, Shysie, Ayva and Abbey (Year 9). They have all formed a close friendship after hosting and being hosted both in Sydney in 2016 and on the Japan Tour in 2017. Sakura and K...ana will take part in regular classes at Hills Grammar and in HIE classes to improve their English skills. In the true spirit of exchange they will also be sharing Japanese culture with our students whilst helping them with their Japanese skills. The girls have designed a personal interest project which they will research whilst in Australia and present to their peers when they return to Japan. Kana will explore the history of ANZAC and Sakura will research the way people in Western cultures express themselves. We wish the girls a productive and enjoyable stay at Hills Grammar.

Our School Leaders are gaining firsthand exposure to the challenges of international diplomacy at the 10-day Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) in Washington.
Alex, Julia, Selina and Will have each been assigned to country groups and will address key world issues (such as cultural diplomacy and environmental sustainability) before representing their assigned country at a model United Nations at the conclusion of the conference.
We hope they enjoy this valuable experience ...and will eagerly await updates from them.

The MPH was transformed into a bustling marketplace this morning for the Year 5 Market Day. Students have explored the process and production of goods or services and developed business, marketing and financial plans to support their own business. All money raised will be given to their nominated charity, ShelterBox Australia.

Last week, our Year 6 students visited Canberra to consolidate their learning of Australian democracy. They toured Parliament House, witnessing the House of Representatives in session. The Electoral Commission demonstrated the voting procedure and the students enjoyed a mock election experience. Questacon was also very exciting, allowing the students to investigate and test scientific theories. The War Memorial was memorable as our School Leaders took part in the Commemorative Service.

Year 9 Commerce students were asked to set up a small business to design and develop an environmentally sustainable product manufactured from plastic bottles. The resulting trade display was testament to their creativity, critical thinking and hard work.

Suggestions include: * Pasta, rice, whole grain cereal * Canned vegetables and legumes (ring pull) * Canned fruit (ring pull)... * Canned protein foods like tuna, salmon, chicken, beef stews, soups – (ring pull) * Long life milk products * Biscuits (sweet and savoury) * Long life juice/poppers * Dried fruits * Tea/coffee * Breakfast cereal, oatmeal

Well done to all who participated in the Waste Free Lunch Challenge (following on from yesterday's #worldenvironmentday). This challenge is one of our Sustainability Education initiatives; fostering a better understanding of how we can take action to reduce waste and promote healthy eating.

Mrs Groves (was my last year teacher), she is sexist and overall a rotten teacher. If a girl gets in trouble she will never ever say that the girl did anything wrong she will always make it that the boy was the one who did something wrong. An example of sexism is she said that boys don't have attention to detail but of course girls have huge attention to detail. She is also racist by saying Nigerians are born to scam. Another reason for her sexism is she always says that the girls are always quite and perfect and the boys are always loud and don't do their work. We had an angles stem challenge last year and the picture was very misleading because we thought we had toilet rolls and we thought we could use scissors but we could not. Another example of sexism is that my friend last year he wasn't doing any work and Mrs Groves told him to get out, while a girl was there and she did not tell her to get out, and my friend went for a 6km sprint. Once when I was using a chair that a girl wasn't even using and when i took the chair i could keep it but i had to get three chairs for the girls.

I love this school and it's environment. The people are really nice and the teachers are supportive. I have felt more included at this school than at my old one.

Speaking as a former student - The teachers were great for the most part, although there were a few younger teachers that were trying to be student's best friend a little too much and/or allowed their classes to be a bit too disruptive.

Aesthetically, it looks great and looks even better since my time there, but I honestly didn't find the education/experience as a student really any different from the public school I attended prior.

There is a lot more opportunity to explore subjects of interest than you may find in other schools.

The students are the same as you'll find in any other school, and like in any school, some students will just have a better school experience than others.

I look back on my time there with very mixed feelings.
