Podiatric surgery is a specialist field in the podiatry profession. Countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the United Kingdom have accredited podiatric surgeons. Podiatric surgery is defined as "the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related lower extremity structures by accredited and qualified specialist podiatrists".

Podiatric surgeons have been working in Australia since 1975. They are experienced podiatrists who have undertaken extensive, specialised postgraduate training and education in podiatric medicine and surgery. Podiatric surgeons work within the framework of the modern multi-disciplinary healthcare team with general practitioners, specialists and other health professionals, to provide safe and appropriate clinical care for foot, ankle and lower extremity conditions.

It’s members (which include both podiatric and orthopaedic surgeons) share a commitment to improving the quality of life of patients with foot and ankle pathology by using innovative techniques based on Minimal Incision Surgery . New technology has allowed surgeons to see inside the foot whilst operating. Small instruments are introduced through tiny incisions, which allow the treatment of bone and soft tissues. The smaller incisions result in less surgical trauma and therefore less chance of infection and a faster recovery. You can also have both feet treated at the same time, there is less scaring and you can also walk straight away. The joints are preserved and it is possible to perform most of this surgery under local anaesthetic and /or sedation depending on your level of anxiety.
