The Parents Village Description

The Parents Village is a unique perinatal support service for expectant and new parents. Founded by Lana Sussman (social worker and counsellor) and Kirsty Levin (psychologist and counsellor) ‚Äď their vision is to rebuild a village community for Sydney based parents and beyond. The famous old proverb states ‚ÄúIt takes a village to raise a child‚ÄĚ. Kirsty and Lana also know that it takes a village to raise parents too!

Becoming a parent is about much more than giving birth. Birth is just the beginning of an ongoing learning curve and transformation, and no parent should feel unprepared and alone in this life altering experience.

Lana and Kirsty take an honest and holistic approach to connect, support, nurture and empower new parents as they transition into and adjust to this new role. Through a range of services including: prenatal parenthood-prep workshops, postnatal support groups, career coaching, and counselling services, expectant and new parents have an opportunity to explore, process and prepare for all that comes with this extraordinary journey.

The Parents Village is based in Kingsford and services South, East and Western Sydney.

"For the rest of their lives, our children’s happiness at home and success at work will be determined by how well they can navigate relationships and resolve difficult issues. If we write every unpleasant encounter off as bullying, we don’t prepare them well..."

Such a beautiful and powerful image. We honor all the struggles and challenges that some of our village have had to walk through to become parents. IVF is such a ‚Äúsilent‚ÄĚ struggle... I love the way this image speaks volumes in a powerful but gentle way too.... wow. ūüíú

Sometimes we have to let go of our need to compete, our desire for control, and our push for perfection, to truly help our kids become their best selves.

So many wonderful insights and advice here. I know that Time Outs have rarely worked in our household. It has typically resulted in increased anger, tears and more screaming from my DD‚Äôs. So we scrapped it. But we can only really tend to our children‚Äôs needs when we are calm and composed ourselves. So maybe sometimes we -the parents - could do with a mini time out before attending to our children‚Äôs behaviour. This might just be a quick 30 second breather to calm down our frazzled nerves, anxiety or aggro. Or an opportunity to repeat a few positive mantras like ‚ÄėI got this‚Äô. Love to hear your thoughts on what works for you.

So it‚Äôs been international breastfeeding week! And we all know the incredible benefits of breastfeeding... but during this week I have really been feeling for the women in our village who, for whatever reason, couldn‚Äôt or chose not to breastfeed. It‚Äôs not easy when there is an influx of messages telling us that there is only one way to be. And Mums especially good at feeling ‚Äúmother guilt‚ÄĚ... but what I always think of is back when we all lived in villages.. breastfeeding wou...ld have been so much easier. We would have seen many women before us breastfeeding, the women who couldn‚Äôt breastfeed would have nourished their child with a ‚Äúwet nurse‚ÄĚ or other women in the village who could provide... you aren‚Äôt broken. You did your best. so to all you mammas out there... breastfeeding mums, bottle feeding mums... you‚Äôve done good!! You‚Äôve done your best. Hats (or bras!) off to your boobs and the nourishment, comfort, cuddles and also sexual pleasure (ūü§ę) they provide. ūüíúūüíúūüíúūüíúūüíú if you are pregnant or just had baby and are having troubles breastfeeding, contact us or the ABA and we can recommend some incredible support for you on this journey.

"Why are traffic lights red, yellow and green?"
"When a child asks you a question like this, you have a few options. You can shut her down with a "Just because." You can explain: "Red is for stop and green is for go." Or, you can turn the question back to her and help her figure out the answer with plenty of encouragement."

if only every new mum could be thrown a postpartum party with her nearest and dearest, instead of a baby shower, so that she could be fed, nurtured, supported and allowed to recover.

I see living life like weaving a beautiful and complex tapestry... it takes hard work, skill, and focus to integrate all parts, all experiences, the joy, the sorrow... into a piece that is intricate, exquisite and uniquely yours ūüíúūüíôūüíúūüíôūüíúūüíô
