The Permaculture Interpretive Garden Description
Situated in Sydney's coastal Eastern Suburbs, the site is a prototype application of permaculture design in a local government context.
Community resilience education, an introductory science for pre-and-primary schools program, the Eco Heroes Club for 5-11 year olds, active and passive recreation and preservation of the remaining Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub ecosystem are found here. The use and features on site have been developed from a public placemaking and consultation process that took place after the site was handed over to council.
The site consists of the Permaculture Interpretive Garden, Randwick Community Centre (retrofitted for energy and water efficiency), Randwick Environment Park and the Munda Street Reserve. Wild food and habitat trails, which will be used in the schools program, are in development.
This is a regional park that attracts people from the Randwick local government area as well as further afield. Events held through the year include the Ecoliving Fair, Festival of Forgotten Skills and community swap party during National Recycling Week, International Permaculture Day, Fair Food Week and Nox Night Sculpture exhibition.
Development of the park as a multiple use open space and educational facility was stimulated by increasing population density and the need for multi-purpose design for public parks.
The environmental, design and social value of the regional park have been recognised with Sustainable Cities and a Sustainable Design awards. Educational staff have also been recognised with an award.
To keep the area clean and safe for families and children from the preschool at the community centre who use the open space, and because of the proximity of a childrens' playgroun, the open space is a dog-on-leash area only.
