Joss believes in the potential of renewable energy to make lives better. Currently undertaking a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, he has designed and optimised a powerful small-scale wind turbine, breaking new ground in energy efficiency. Not only is Joss’s work positively impacting the environment and the cost of electricity, it’s allowing entire communities to access it for the first time.

Who would have imagined the tiny sea sponge could be harnessed as a potential treatment for cancer? Associate Professor Chris Scarlett and his team did as they scoured the ocean floor in search of one of the planet’s simplest organisms.

Women continue to be under-represented in medicine, particularly at senior levels, in leadership roles and in certain specialisations such as surgery. In Australia, USA and the UK, only around 10% of surgeons are female despite now over half of medical graduates being women.
Dr Nikki Stamp is a one of only a handful of female cardiothoracic surgeons in Australia, and a mentor and supporter of women in surgery and of women in all careers. She is a participant of the #ILookLike...ASurgeon social media campaign, which is a movement based on the idea that ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’, and geared towards providing visible gender role models and showing women everywhere that gender is not an obstacle to achieving your career.
In her keynote lecture, Dr Stamp will explore issues of gender equity in the medical work force, including in her own specialisation of surgery, and will discuss what needs to be done to address the under representation of women in these fields.

So, you can take some of the stress out of your final school exams, knowing your ATAR isn’t all that matters.
