Toukley Dentists: Dr Stewart & Dr Cao Description

Toukley’s choice for professional general dentistry

At Toukley Dental Practice, our aim is to assist our patients in achieving the very best dental function and health. We want to prevent dental problems which will safeguard your long term oral health. Our general dentistry services include:
Dentures (Partial and Full)
Dentures, also known as false teeth, or plates, are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth, and which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the mouth. Conventional dentures are removable. There are two main categories of dentures, Acrylic /plastic dentures and Metal framework dentures.

Replacing missing teeth with dentures can help patients in the following ways: chewing ability is improved, speech is improved, support for the lips and cheeks which will restore the fullness in appearance that can occur after losing teeth. All of these things combined improve function but most importantly, self esteem.

Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment falls into a field of dentistry called endodontics, which deals with the nerve, or sensitive inner portion of the tooth. Root canal treatments, and other related procedures, have helped millions of patients overcome poor tooth health, and have reduced painful problems.

If the tooth does not have an active infection, it should not hurt. With modern anaesthesia, painless root canals are not a myth anymore. However, teeth that require a root canals are not always painful. Sometimes, teeth may be dead for months or years, and may not cause pain at all. Only when they get infected and cause a considerable amount of damage in the tooth and in the bone holding them, will they cause pain. If a root canal is done at the right time, before it starts causing pain, the prognosis of the tooth is always better.

Moreover, the strengthening of the tooth after the procedure with fillings and crowns /bridges is important as dead (root canal teeth) are more brittle than living teeth. Placing a crown /bridge on the tooth is the general recommendation for teeth that have had root canal therapy.

Extractions and Minor Oral Surgery
Extracting teeth is viewed as a last resort in modern dentistry and usually only occurs as a result of chronic disease or trauma. Both Dr Stewart and Dr Malesu are very competent at tooth extractions and other minor oral surgery.
Scaling and Cleaning

Professional clean: Visiting Dr Brett Stewart every six months for a dental assessment plays a vital role in prevention. A professional clean removes plaque and tartar above and below your gum line that at-home cleaning cannot tackle. Next, a fluoride application will further protect and strengthen teeth.
Preventative Dentistry
Preventative care is a modern approach to dentistry. Preventative dentists aim to reduce the amount of dental treatment that you need by working together with you to maintain a healthy mouth. The hope is to avoid the traditional cycle of fillings and extractions. Preventative dentistry can help you to keep your own teeth for a lifetime.

The two main causes of tooth loss are dental decay and gum disease. With modern dental treatments and oral hygiene products, it is possible to prevent or at least substantially reduce these diseases in the mouth. Preventative dentistry can benefit anyone who still has some of their own teeth – it’s never too late to start.

Scaling and polishing, Fissure sealants and Mouthguards are some of the preventative measures our team will perform on your teeth and gums when they devise an individual plan of action for you.

HICAPs is available and the Child Dental Benefits Scheme is bulk billed.

Anxious Patients:

We are mindful that some of our clients have experienced anxiety issues when undergoing dental treatment. We have facilities for nitrous oxide sedation (“happy gas”), and we also have the Penthrox anti-anxiety inhaler (“The green whistle”). These methods assist in relaxing patients with anxiety issues. We strive to do everything we can to make your dental experience as pleasant as possible.
