The Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand is the peak body for all health professionals and scientists working in respiratory health in Australia and New Zealand.
Our Mission is to lead, support and enable all health workers and researchers who aim to prevent, cure and relieve disability caused by lung disease.
The Thoracic Society of Australia commenced in 1961 with New Zealand joining forces to form the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand in 1988.
TSANZ aims to improve knowledge and understanding of lung disease, to prevent respiratory illness through research and health promotion, and to improve health care for people with respiratory disorders.
To achieve these aims, the Society promotes the:
1) Highest quality and standards of patient care
2) Development and application of knowledge about respiration and respiratory disease
3) Collaboration between all national organisations whose objects are to improve the well-being of individuals with lung disease and to promote better lung health for the community
4) Professional needs of the membership
5) Goal of a tobacco smoke free society

Today is World No Tobacco Day and this year the WHO is focusing on cigarette and heart health. The Federation of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS) will today release “Electronic Cigarette Use in Youths: A Position Statement of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies”.
