About Tumut Broom Factory

The Tumut Broom Factory is the last original Millet Broom Factory in Australia. Handmade millet brooms have been made at the factory the same way since 1946.

Owners Geoff Wortes and Robert Richards worked on and off at the factory when they were in their twenties, returned to broom making in the late 80's and took partnership of the business in 2003.

“I’m not quite sure what the attraction to broom making is but I think we must have millet in our blood. ” - Geoff

Drop into the factory on a weekday and you will hear about the history of the industry and the intricacies of the broom making process, as you experience the magic of the broom making tradition.

Rob and Geoff bind, sew, trim and package brooms at the factory using locally grown and imported millet. The brooms are bunched up by the dozen, labelled and sent off around the country.

"Most shearing sheds in Australia have got one of our brooms in them somewhere. " - Geoff

Tumut Brooms are crafted by hands that have years of experience, and the quality of Geoff and Rob's workmanship is clear when you purchase a Tumut Broom.

"You've got to have a good work ethic doing this work. Someone's going to pay decent money for the broom so it's no good making something shoddy. " - Rob
