Happy 21st birthday Ultrasound Care. Twenty one years, 50 staff, and possibly the largest women-owned, women run practice in Australia. We owe it all to our wonderful colleagues, and to our founder, Dr Philippa Ramsay. We are there for the women of NSW and it is our honor and privilege to serve. Birth trauma is real. The doctors at Ultrasound Care are all obstetricians with, collectively around 100 years of experience in hospitals and delivery suites. We have all seen birth trauma, many times. This is a timely discussion, because traumatised women have always resulted, unpredictably, from difficult labours and deliveries. Many years ago, this trauma was denigrated and minimised, but far less so now. The problem arises- should we get informed consent from our patients about vaginal delivery? Should we disclose the risks instead of just assuming that all women will be better off with vaginal delivery? Is there any research we can do that would predict who is more likely to have a traumatic birth? How do we, as doctors, as mothers, as women, approach this?
