11 years ago, after the birth of our second child, Pilates was strongly (VERY strongly) recommended to me by my wonderful Osteopath. I had been suffering from ongoing issues, as many women experience during /after pregnancy, such as lower back pain and problems with my neck and shoulders. My posture, for the first time in my life, was also pretty poor.
After my first class, I was hooked ! I love challenging myself (I have been known to be little competitive), have always been keen to try new things, and I immediately loved being able to work my body and mind at the same time. My competitive side was also satisfied as I could compete against myself, each class, striving to do a little better!
After 2 years of regular classes, I was certainly in the best shape, mentally and physically, of my life. It was at this point that I very seriously contemplated Pilates Instructor Certification. And then came baby no. 3 !
Baby no. 3 is now almost 9 years old, so quite some time has passed in between those initial thoughts of teaching. I knew that it would be something I would come back to at some point in my life.
Fast forward to 2014 /2015 . . . Pilates Instructor Certified !
For me, Pilates has taught me to be mindful of how my body feels and works. When I practice regularly, my body feels strong, I walk taller, and most importantly, my mind is calm. Pilates, for me, has always been a great stress reliever. At times when I am more stressed, I prioritise pilates, increase my classes (daily if needed), and stress management is significantly improved.
I hope that each of my class participants, over time, develops this same sense of mind-body awareness. By working our bodies as a whole, not only will you flatten the abs (who doesn't want that), however you will also become stronger, possibly leaner, have greater strength and flexibility, coordination, balance and muscle endurance. All of the things your body requires to get you through life with minimal physical problems. As an added benefit, for those sports men & women amongst us, improved performance in your chosen area will also become noticeable as you develop a better relationship between your mind and body.
