Usyd China Development Society

We are a not-for-profit society initiated and independently operated by students at the University of Sydney. We aspire to become the most influential China-oriented student society in the Southern Hemisphere. Through hosting a range of academic and cultural events, we strive to promote a global understanding of China among the younger generation.

Founded in 2016, CDS is a student-lead organization inspired by societies situated in the Cambridge, Oxford, and LSE university campus that works to inform on issues surrounding the rapidly changing landscape of China. The overarching idea is to migrate a similar culture to Sydney University campus, staying true to University Latin motto established in 1857: Sidere mens eadem mutato, translated to “the stars change, the mind remains the same. ”

Our society is one of great originality. Sydney University possesses a plethora of life-entertainment communities / societies within the Chinese student circle, but very few societies focused on intellectual discussions in contrast and proportionality. With the understanding that there is a Chinese Studies Centre established by the government of Sydney, there is a market for individuals that are interested in discussions and exchange by intellectuals. By establishing CDS, it marks the first student lead society in the University to provide services for students and the wider community. Furthermore, we can use the prestige and opportunities provided by the University to expand our society to the general community.
