Aunty Joan Tranter: #BecauseOfHerWeCan
The theme for NAIDOC Week this year is ‘Because of Her, We Can’ which is all about honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the active and significant roles they play at the community, local, state and national levels.
As leaders, trailblazers, politicians, activists and social change advocates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women fought and continue to fight, for justice, equal rights, our rights to country, for... law and justice, access to education, employment and to maintain and celebrate our culture, language, music and art. Sadly, Indigenous women’s roles have often been invisible, unsung or diminished.
We want to honour Aunty Joan Tranter who has been with UTS since 1997.

For 60 years, Tranby College has been a place of reform, social change and impact for Aboriginal Australians. Within its walls are some of Australia’s most important documents relating to Indigenous vocational training and the Indigenous civil rights movement.
Now, those resources are being digitised and turned into a historic archive that’s set to be accessible by all Australians!!!

Staff, students and alumni are invited to join us to celebrate the launch of Waraburra Nura (The Happy Wanderer’s Place), our community garden on the North-facing balcony of the main tower. Join us at UTS to hear Uncle Allen Madden give a Welcome to Country and Aunty Fran Bodkin share some of her knowledge of the plants.
About Waraburra Nura: The garden is a joint project between UTS Art and the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research that focuses on plants ...that have medicinal uses and are native to the Sydney basin.
The design was created by Yamatji Wajarri woman Nicole Monks and plants were chosen under the consultation of D'harawal Senior and botanist Aunty Fran Bodkin.
The traditional uses of these plants, their stories and their history of cultivation in this region have been shared by Aunty Fran Bodkin in audio recordings on the purpose built website www.waraburranura.com

There were just 28 Indigenous registered architects at the last Census – an increase of one since the national head count five years earlier.
With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples representing 3 per cent of the population, the number should be closer to 500. But Indigenous architects make up just 0.2 per cent of the roughly 12,000 architects in Australia today.
This gap is the target of a new scholarship fund to support Indigenous architecture students like Marni... Reti, now in her fourth year of architecture at UTS and the only Indigenous student in her class.
The Droga Indigenous Architecture Scholarship has been made possible with a $1 million donation from cultural philanthropists the Droga Family Foundation. With additional support from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), the aim is to eventually support up to 10 Indigenous students a year in their studies with UTS’s School of Architecture.
