My father was dying of cancer. I came to the hospital at 6pm to find the staff at the hospital had taken him out of his private room as he was too sick to protest and put him behind the door of a bathroom in a room with three other men with dementia and their families all speaking at the top of their voices. Hunched over sitting frightened at the edge of his bed he was fighting to sit up and breath. The staff ignored him and were chatting happily at their station huddled together. That's how my brother and I found my him hours before he died.
For 3 hours I insisted my father should have the private room that not only had he paid for but that was quieter and larger than the tiny space that he had been dumped into that not even his bags, let alone us, could fit into to be with him during the last hours of his life. Every time I graciously went up to the desk to politely ask when would he be moved back into his private room I was patronised and fobbed off and told it would be soon. After 3 hours and a change of staff I became strident and finally insisted that it was obvious my father was going to die in a matter of hours and that if they didn't move him to a quiet room where we could actually fit to be beside him, instead of us both having to be on top of the bed with him, I would move him myself. The next shift did move him, when they were ready and when I started taking his bags into the free room and moving his bed. The shift before I will never forgive the tourure they allowed the 3 of us to go through during the most harrowing time of our lives. Hideous place. Avoid it!!
