Hi All,
Last night, Western Sydney Kendo Club passed an important milestone. We held our first internal competition (taikai)!
Congratulations to our own Jordan Nguyen who won the Kyu competition & Hugh Chang Sensei, visiting from UTS, who won the Dan competition.
... A big thank you to Jon Wong who organised the draws, Carsten who managed the time keeping, our referees (shinpan), as well as everyone who assisted with tying ribbons, laying out the court (shiaijo) & announcing.
Below are a few pictures from last night, thanks to our photographer Simon Tran.
Many of our club members will be volunteering at the 43th Australian Kendo Championship, held here in Sydney over the Easter long weekend. As it was the first time for some of our members to see or participate in a competition, am hopeful that holding our first internal comp has helped everyone build experience that they can use at the Nationals.
All in all, I'm super stoked about our event last night and am really happy I get the chance to train with everyone. Thanks again for your efforts.
Steve

It's that time of the year again and no we don't mean university starting again. Our beginner classes officially start soon. Through these classes, you will be taught the basics of kendo, such as footwork, posture, the cuts, the shinai and lastly, but most importantly, respect in the dojo.

This weekend, WSKC had the pleasure to learn from Kamei-Sensei and Furukawa-Sensei at the UTS Kendo Seminar 2018 and Open Shield Tournament.
Together, with guidance from the two sensei's, we feel we have nurtured an appreciation of not only shinpan and keiko as seperate entities of kendo, but also of the close relationship between these two elements.
As Furukawa-sensei and Kamei-sensei explains, we engage in keiko to practice our techniques that should achieve ippon (a poin...t) in shiai (competition). As such, the way to deeply learn the elements of keiko, we must fully understand the components that scores an ippon (yuto-datotsu) by active application of the criteria by shinpaning (judging)
Through this experience provided to us by the two visiting sensei's, the club is proud to see our members apply their new found skills in the shiai-jo of the UTS Kendo Open Shield Competition.
Jordan, Steve, Anthony and Carsten displayed much fighting spirit during their shiai, performing admirably in their pools, however unable to make it out.
Kim-sensei performed extremely well during his shiai, taking first place not only in his division (5dan and above) but also winning the Opens championship and thus taking the UTS Open Shield for 2018.
With the conclusion of the event, we would like to thank Kamei-sensei and Furukawa-sensei for taking their time to teach us during the seminar, as well as UTS Kendo Club for organising this fantastic event this year. We would also like to thank any WSKC members who represented our club in the seminar/shiai, with special thanks to Minter-sensei and Kim-sensei for always guiding us and would also like to congratulate Kim-sensei for his victories this weekend.
Ganbatte for success in future events.

Report from Western Sydney Kendo Club participation of the "Kendo Weekend" hosted by NSW Kendo Association
On the Saturday (top picture), the NSW state competition was held, featuring a variety of kendo shiai categories to compete in. Out of this, WSKC saw success in the Kata Kyu (with our team coming first!!) and the Under 16s individivuals (with Geoffrey coming third). In addition, WSKC showed good fighting spirit in the other categories we participated in (Men's Kyu and D...an individuals, Kyu and Dan teams), and this spirit will be our prime motivator to do better next year!
Sunday (bottom picture) saw the successful gradings of the WSKC members that participated, with Jordan receiving his 5th Kyu, Geoffrey his 1st Kyu and Michael achieving 1st dan ( the first Shodan for the dark side).
With these results in mind WSKC would like to congratulate all particpants and would like to thank Minter-sensei and Kim-sensei for training us, the event organisers and volunteers for making this event possible, as well as our club's participating and non-participating supporters.
