With growing awareness of emotional intelligence (EI) and its role in the workplace, hiring managers are increasingly on the lookout for individuals with high EI during the interview and wider application process. Check out how you can demonstrate EI at your next interview:
1. Put the emphasis on relationships High EI individuals are able to influence others, develop relationships and to handle disagreements and conflicts effectively. During the interview use examples of wh...ere you have demonstrated an ability to not only work effectively in a group but to change the group dynamic for the better and even inspire others. But be careful not to brag. A big part of EI is also being aware of those around you and their strengths, so make sure to give credit where it's due and to link past successes to those of the wider team.
2. Focus on the challenges as well as achievements EI is strongly linked to resilience, and questions relating to past challenges and obstacles provide a platform to demonstrate your agility and ability to respond to new situations. Provide examples of meeting new challenges and how you've been able to learn and develop through these experiences.
3. Use your weaknesses to your advantage Another key aspect of EI is having the self-awareness to recognise any gaps in your skill set as well as the wherewithal to listen to criticism and take it on board. Use the classic 'what are your weaknesses?' question as a springboard to illustrate this awareness and how you've successfully acted on feedback.
4. Talk about your passions Though it may seem like small talk, recruiters will often talk about your hobbies and interests to better understand the kind of person you are and the things that motivate you. This is your cue to demonstrate your energy and passion; if you can, talk about the role you've played in a sports club or society that demonstrate leadership skills and a capacity to inspire others and to lead them on a journey.
Interviews really only provide a snapshot of your strengths as an employee. You need to make the most of any opportunities you get to demonstrate your emotional intelligence and the range of qualities that this encompasses. Time spent thinking about potential questions they'll ask (and then honing answers to these) is likely to be a solid investment.

Meet our Events Assistant Karla!
"Hi everyone I am a postgraduate international student and also part of the events team of Careers. I arrived in Australia from Peru 4 months ago and having this amazing opportunity of becoming part of Careers using my previous experience as a marketer, makes me feel very grateful.
I still can remember my first thoughts on my first day, how is it going to be here? Is my English good enough to fulfill my co-worker’s expectations? Am I going to ...make new friends? Well... I must admit that sometimes I keep asking myself some of those questions, but everything is easier if you work with amazing human beings that are always supporting you unconditionally. Moreover, in this short time that I’ve been working here, I have discovered that the Careers team puts a lot of effort, passion and commitment into their work supporting other people's goals, that is to deliver excellent professionals into the workforce".
