White Rabbit Gallery Description

The White Rabbit Collection is one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of contemporary Chinese art. Founded by Kerr and Judith Neilson, it focuses on works produced after 2000.

The origins of the Collection go back to the late 1990s, when Judith Neilson engaged Wang Zhiyuan, a Chinese artist then living in Sydney, as her art tutor. He introduced her to the astonishing explosion of creativity taking place in China in the wake of the “Opening Up” that had begun in 1989. Mrs Neilson began buying works, but soon ran out of space to hang them. She and her husband then decided to open a gallery that would make the exciting world of contemporary Chinese art available to all Australians.

The White Rabbit Gallery, a converted former knitting factory near Sydney’s Central Station, has four floors of exhibition space as well as a theatrette, a library and a teahouse. Only a fraction of the Collection is on show at any time. The entire contents of the gallery are rehung twice a year.

Great art space on multiple levels. Plenty of friendly, helpful staff. Didn't try the cafe this time but looks interesting. Close to Green Square, Spice Alley precinct. Recommended.

It's a place where you can realize how many great artists there are in China.
An art museum that entertains the eyes and ears with unique works every season.
It's not as big as I thought, but it's a variety of art exhibitions in each section that are organized in a variety of ways.
Personally, I really like and cherish this place.

Super cute free gallery! It has three levels (elevator) and is easy to enter and exit. The art work is super unique and has the conceptual context. When I went, they had a game and you got to play it! Definitely worth visiting if you're around the area. Why not?

Always surprising and imaginative, the new exhibition 'Big in China' expands what you think art can be. At times it places you in the uncanny valley or in a tranquil state of reflection. Some pieces leave you silently contemplating the time and artistry involved. This gallery curates its pieces elegantly and, much like its serves of egg and chive dumplings, you are left feeling sated but looking forward for more.

A lot of security at the moment with Covid

Be aware of over zealous hall monitors.

Was looking at the "Cathedral made of bondage material" piece, and because it's an intricate work and there's no guard line, I tried to get a closer look at the individual pieces. I was clearly 30cm minimum away from the artwork still and I'm clearly not touching the artwork, and I got called out by the hall monitor to not stand too close to the piece. Despite that I wasn't the only one standing at that distance.

I asked her how far I should be standing since there's no clear guideline and no one is touching the artwork, then I got cornered and told off by her and her colleague on why from their perspective I could be touching things.

One, if you are so paranoid about it, please put a guard line around the artwork, that would be a better communication to the spectators than ganging up on someone.

Second, I do feel very unjustly persecuted by being accused of doing something that I haven't done and would never do. Would you be comfortable if someone accuse you of touching things as soon as you step into a shop? Especially since many others were standing as close?

I've loved this gallery for a long time and have been a patron here for many years, this is the first time I feel uncomfortable in there and hence didn't finish the exhibition. I would definitely tell people about this.

My favourite gallery in Sydney. Really interesting and thought provoking exhibits that rotate fairly often. It's a nice place to spend an hour or so on a weekend. Free entry is a bonus!

Free art gallery in the heart of Chippendale. Frequently changing installations and themes, great for couples and families. Small gift shop downstairs sells nice crafty items.

A fantastic contemporary art gallery with engaging artwork and a great tea room with gluten free dumplings. My favourite gallery on this Sydney holiday!

I adore this gallery! Most of the art works have a brilliant combination of being visually stunning and clever conceptually. Skillful art with thoughtfulness. Majority of the with is highly political. I would absolutely recommend this gallery.

The Dark Matters will be my favourite 2017 exhibition. Fantastic gallery that is an entire private collection of one woman. Amazing!

User

One of my favourite galleries. Showcases contemporary Chinese art from a private collection with new installations twice a year. It also has a great dumpling restaurant inside.

Great gallery to visit in Chippendale, with contemporary Chinese art. Nice and cosy tea house. Be mindful not to carry umbrellas in, as sometimes you could be rudely reminded by staff members even when there is no sign whatsoever about this.
