I have been more than unpleased with the care with the antenatal clinic at Wollongong Hospital. Being pregnant is hard enough and dealing with the clinic hasn't made that strain at all easier. I go there now every week as I'm nearly 38 weeks and all I get done is my blood pressure then get told that I can go home. What's the point of going? I may as well just see my free doctor, even he does a million times more. I even asked to see the labour ward and just got told that it was on the second floor. Thank you for letting me know exactly where to go if my waters break in the middle of the night.

A sad case of patient care and work focus outcomes instead of patient care. Unfortunately for my wife and i this meanr no staff responding to emergency call when we were in the birth suite. There was a lack of care throughout the labour and the final kicker was myself delivering the baby in the shower and then running into the coridoor after handing my son back to my distraught wife when the birth attendants finally arrived. :(

I have four children, all of them born in different hospitals. My youngest was born at Wollongong and it was BY FAR the most pleasant hospital experience I've had. The nurses were wonderful. I actually thought they were abnormally nice lol.
The doctors including during the pregnancy appointments, were very courteous even when they're under a lot of pressure.
Baby was overdue and I was induced. Even though I was low risk, there was always a midwife and I was so well supported.
The health assessment for baby was VERY thorough, more so than other hospitals.
After the birth, there were times that understaffing was obvious, but nothing that was serious.
It was (apart from the ouchie birth- thanks bub) a pleasant hospital stay.

Love the staff.. thanks to all. Hospitals have their own time zone though. Things happen but at their own pace. Sometimes frustrating but the system saved my life. Where would we be without these great men and women.

After a serious family emergency this hospital and its staff not only exceeded expectations but also saved a life. I am forever grateful.

DO NOT GO HERE, if you can avoid it. I have been to Wollongong Hospital twice and both times were unsatisfactory, not just in terms of my 'customer service experience' but in terms of my health. The first time I went here I was kept waiting for hours, despite an overdose that required immediate attention. The second time...the way I was treated was so severe that I required psychiatric care afterwards. I would recommend that anyone in a position able to, to avoid this hospital. Staff are not trained correctly and there is no consideration for patient care.

My mother, who is a gold card veteran, was recently admitted by ambulance as a trauma patient. Although specifying that she had private health cover, she was told she must be operated on at Wollongong Hospital.

After an overnight stay in emergency ward, her first day on the ward, as both a diabetic and elderly, she had tea at 5:30 pm and then was fasted until next day in preparation for surgery. At 3.30pm we were told she would not be operated on until the next day.

This pattern continued for five days, with my mother finally being operated on the following Saturday. My mother kept on getting put on end of list. The explanation was that 'other newer patients were arriving daily and taking priority.'

We understand that doctors have to prioritise, but we questioned when this elderly, diabetic, dehydrated and in agony patient would get prioritised? My mother had four hip fractures, waited five days for surgery, ended up with a UTI and fluid on the lungs from inactivity.

Once surgery was completed, we were advised that the only rehab facilities available were either Bulli or Coledale hospital. We decided to contact Figtree Private hospital ourselves, where there was a private room available straight away.

It seemed that while there was a lot of different medical staff looking after my mothers health - it was a silo approach. One team of specialists did not talk to another. This lack of communication was both frightening and disempowering

We felt at times that we were the only ones caring for my mother's welfare. I feel sorry for elderly patients without family. Getting conflicting information and doctors not visiting when a family member is present made this a stressful period. I would not like to be a patient at this hospital if you cannot speak up for yourself.

With regards to other care at this hospital: The nursing staff in general were good, some compassionate, some attentive. The physiotherapist intervention was at best, minimal. The rooms were relatively clean, but putting dementia patients in the general ward was quite confrontational and disruptive

Having to wait at "emergency" for 4-5 hours is literally the worst sort of service ever. Plus nobody has the body language of seeming to get the job done quicker. I've seen poorer countries with cheaper yet better and efficient service than this crap.
