Originally formed as the Central West Conservation Farming Association (CWCFA) in Parkes in 1994, the organisation emerged from growing interest in conservation agriculture practices in Central West NSW. As an Association, it was committed to informing farmers about the latest farming practices through field days, workshops and field trips, supported by the expertise of extension staff from the government departments, other farming systems groups, commercial businesses and other specialists in the field.

In 2008, CWCFA changed its name to the Conservation Agriculture and No-till Farming Association (CANFA) in order to be more representative of the type of farming being practiced by its members.
